England will look to win their maiden Champions Trophy title under Jos Buttler in the ongoing ODI extravaganza happening in Pakistan and Dubai. Back in 2013, the English side ended their journey as runners-up after losing to India in the final at the Oval by a close margin of five runs. This time, England are looking solid as they have a balanced squad which includes a few veterans along with some youngsters who have the potential to outsmart their opponents and lift the distinguished trophy.
In recent years, England’s graph has soared in white-ball cricket as they are the only side along Australia to win two limited-over tournaments with their success in World Cup 2019, held in England and Wales and T20 World Cup 2022 played in Australia. In England's Champions Trophy 2025 team, they have some players from their World Cup 2019-winning squad and these names will look to be at their best. The ongoing competition can be the last appearance of these veterans in the Champions Trophy. Check out the four England players who might not feature in the next Champions Trophy edition most-likely to be held in 2029.
4. Mark Wood
England pacer Mark Wood, who is 35, might not play for England until the return of the next Champions Trophy installment in 2029. In recent years, injuries have hampered his participation in competitive cricket and noting that, it can be predicted that the speedster’s career might not last long for England for four more years.
3. Adil Rashid
The leg-break bowler Adil Rashid is at the final stage of his international career. In his illustrious stint with England, he has helped the team to taste notable success in World Cup 2019 and T20 World Cup 2022. This time, he will look to produce his best with the ball to help England achieve the trophy which they couldn't in 2004 and 2013.
2. Jos Buttler
Skipper Jos Buttler is another player who might not get the chance to represent England in the next Champions Trophy edition. The English wicket-keeper batter hasn’t been consistent in ODIs for the last few years. Back in World Cup 2023, his team failed to defend their title and Buttler also looked completely out of rhythm with his bat. This year, he has put up underwhelming batting shows in ODIs. Besides his form, his age is another factor that might bound him to hang his boots before 2029.
1. Joe Root
Joe Root has done a magnificent job for England in Tests but in ODIs, he hasn’t been consistent with his bat which doesn’t seal his spot in England’s 50-over squad. Talking about his appearance in the Champions Trophy 2029, it’s highly unlikely as he will turn 38 by then and ECB might prefer a youngster over him to strengthen England’s top-order
