As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 comes closer, players from both Australia and India are backing their respective teams ahead of the much-awaited series. Australia are looking for a Test series win against India from the last 10 years, and will be finally looking to get their hands on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy this time. Star Australian spinner Nathan Lyon also came with a bold statement where he backed Australia to register a 5-0 clean sweep against India in the upcoming Test series.
Notably, India last lost a Test series against Australia in 2014-15. After that, India have been victorious against the Kangaroos in every Border-Gavaskar Trophy since then, (2017, 2018-19, 2020-21 and 2023), with two series wins coming down under. Now, the current Test champions will be looking to finally end India’s winning streak. The five-match Test series will start on November 22, with the first match scheduled to take place at Optus Stadium in Perth.
I have eyes on this series for a long time now: Nathan Lyon
In a conversation with Alyssa Healy on the Willow Talk podcast, Nathan Lyon said that he has been thinking about the BGT 2024-25 since England toured India for a five-match Test series at the start of the year. Notably, India won that series against England by 4-1 after losing the first Test. Speaking further, Nathan Lyon also backed batters like Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head to score big runs against India.
"It’s been 10 years since we have won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. I started thinking about this series when England were over in India, watching them to go about it. I love the game and I will watch a decent Test match but I have eyes on this series for a long time now. My prediction is 5-0 to Australia,” Nathan Lyon said. "We need big runs. We need the guys, who are talented enough to get the hundred. The likes of Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Travis Head, all the top order. I don’t want 101 or 107, I want 180 and 200," the Australian spinner further added.
