The Indian men’s hockey team rewrote history at the Paris Olympics 2024, winning back-to-back bronze medals for the second time in the sport on Thursday, August 8. After defeating Spain 2-1 at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir, the India players and support staff celebrated their triumph in style, sending the social media X platform into complete ecstasy.
Notably, India are the most successful nation at the Olympic Games in men’s hockey with eight gold, one silver, and four bronze medals. In 1928, the Men in Blue kick-started their dominance in men’s hockey at the Olympic Games, which has continued for the better part of the last 100 years.
The bronze medal match at the Paris 2024 was also the final appearance in the international hockey career of PR Sreejesh, the Indian goalkeeper. He was exceptional in performing his goal-keeping duties, keeping the Spanish attackers at bay, especially in the all-important fourth quarter, when they searched for an equaliser.
Harmanpreet Singh, the captain of India, converted two penalty corners on either side of half-time, to create the difference at the end. Spain had taken the lead in the 18th minute after their captain Marc Miralles converted the penalty stroke.
