It marked the end of an era after star Indian off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made a sudden announcement of his retirement after the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test down under. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma also reflected on Ashwin’s retirement in a post-match press conference. During the press conference, a reporter also asked Rohit about the future of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, after which the Indian skipper came up with a hilarious response.

Speaking first, Rohit Sharma hinted towards retirement of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara but later confirmed that the doors are always open for them. "Bilkul. Itna experience hai unke paas. Itne matches unhone jitaaye hain toh kahin na kahin, abhi aapko kisi left ya right mein dekhna hai toh yeh log nahin rahenge. By the way Ajinkya Rahane retire nahin hua hai. Aap mereko marwaaoge yaar. Pujara bhi retirement announce nahin kiya hai yaar,” Rohit said during the press conference as the room was filled with laughter.

The doors are always open for them: Rohit Sharma hints Rahane and Pujara comeback in Test side

During the press conference, skipper Rohit Sharma also mentioned the possibility of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteswar Pujara to return in the Indian Test side. Notably, both the players haven’t been seen playing a Test match for India for more than a year. Rahane was recently playing for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and adjudged player of the series for being the highest run getter. On the other hand, Pujara is a part of the commentary in Star Sports for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under.

"They have scored so many runs, helped India win so many matches so obviously they will be missed. By the way, Rahane has not announced retirement yet, you guys will get me into trouble. Pujara has not announced his retirement either, they are just not here right now. They are always welcome, and the doors are always open for them. You almost got me into trouble,” Rohit Sharma was quoted as saying by India Today.
