Star Indian shuttler PV Sindhu defeated Wen Chi Hsu of Chinese Taipei by 21-11, 21-10 in the Round of 16 at the Arctic Open 2023 Super 500 in Finland. With this victory, the 28-year-old remained the only Indian badminton player in the competition as Kidambi Srikanth and others lost their respective matches.
Sindhu, who has struggled for form since recovering from an injury sustained during the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, reached the quarter-final in the Finland Open Super 500 women's singles in less than 40 minutes. The Hyderabad-based shuttler will now square off against Vietnam's Thuy Linh Nguyen in the quarter-final on Friday.
PV Sindhu, who lost the women's badminton singles quarterfinal in the Asian Games 2023 against China's He Bingjiao, last played in a semi-final during the Malaysia Masters Super 500 in May.
Kidambi Srikanth and others crashed out
Apart from Sindhu, no Indian shuttler could advance to the quarter-finals in their respective events as former World No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth suffered a 15-21, 12-21 loss against Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan in the Round of 16 while Kiran George and Aakarshi Kashyap also lost their chances to reach the quarter-finals with straight-game loss to China's Lu Guang Zu and Wang Zhi Yi respectively.
Sindhu is the only Indian left in the competition as the Indian women’s doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa also lost 19-21, 16-21 to France’s Margot Lambert and Anne Tran and ended their campaign at the Arctic Open 2023.
