World number four, Arjun Erigaisi, who recently became the second Indian chess player after Viswanathan Anand to cross the 2800-Elo barrier in classical chess rating, is set to make his debut in the Norway Chess tournament in 2025. The tournament is set to take place from May 26 to June 6 and will be played in a distinctive six-player double round-robin format. He was recently seen representing team Alkaloid in the 2024 European Chess Club Cup.

Arjun Erigaisi achieved the 2800-Elo milestone after defeating Russia’s Dmitry Andreikin with the white pieces in the fifth round during the 2024 European Chess Club Cup. As of FIDE rating list on December 2024, Erigaisi currently stands at 2801, while his current rank is number four in the world.

I used to lose games because of over-ambition and a lack of objectivity: Arjun Erigaisi

The 21-year-old Arjun Erigaisi has been making India proud at international level from a very young age. He earned the title of grandmaster at the age of just 14 years, 11 months, 13 days. Apart from that, Erigaisi also became India’s highest rated played in September 2024 and went to achieve the milestone of 2801 threshold in December 2024. Reflecting on his growth, Erigaisi said that he used to lose games earlier because of over ambition, but now he challenges it in a balanced way.

“I used to lose games because of over-ambition and a lack of objectivity, but now I strive to channel my ambition in a balanced way,” Arjun Erigaisi was quoted as saying by Sportstar. “There are a lot of exciting things about Norway Chess, but for me, I would say the time control and Armageddon format stand out the most to me,” he further added.
