After a long wait of 5 years, the Summer Games were finally back and what an absolute extravaganza it was in Tokyo! Despite the COVID-19 concerns and so much uncertainty, Tokyo successfully hosted the event which concluded on August 8, Sunday. India had sent their biggest-ever contingent of 124 participants who were representing 1.3 billion people. The target was simple - Break the nation's record medal tally in Olympics.
Despite a few setbacks, the athletes ensured that the target was fulfilled as India ended the event with 7 medals, breaking their previous best record of 6 medals at London 2012. With 1 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze, it was India's most successful Olympic campaign in terms of medals won.

India ended at 48th position in Tokyo
Talking about the final standings, India ended Tokyo 2020 at a much-improved 48th position (out of 206) as Neeraj's gold medal on Day 15 was like a cherry on top of cake for the contingent. In terms of position in the medal tally, it was India's best-ever performance in this century.
After ending Sydney 2000 at 71st position, India bettered their positions in next two events by finishing at 65th and 50th spots respectively at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 respectively. While the nation finished at 55th position at London 2012, it was a disappointing campaign for India at Rio 2016 as they were ranked 67th. This is why Tokyo 2020 is being termed as one of the best-ever Olympics for the country.
