Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan cricket team, has slapped a PKR 1 billion defamation suit on a journalist after the latter accused him of misconduct during the T20 World Cup 2024. After he initially had threatened to consider the option of taking a legal action against YouTubers and former cricketers, the Pakistan captain have finally taken the required actions into the matter. 

The Pakistan batter has slapped a notice worth PKR 1 billion after the journalist, named Mubashir Luqman alleged match fixing jibe on social media. The above-named journalist had said, “If you look Babar Azam got a new Audi car and said ‘it was gifted by my brother’. I was wondering what does his brother do to gift him such a costly car?”

He further added, “Where did this car come from?” This is when the Pakistani scribe went onto allege match-fixing after the men in green’s early exit from the tournament.”

As per the legal notice served, point number 6 states , “Insofar as far as our client is concerned, you are hereby called upon to tender an un-conditional apology and retraction in the same manner in which you issued the defamatory statements (on the aforementioned Youtube show) and will the same prominence withing a period of 14 days, failing to which our client reserves the right to institute legal proceedings in a court of competent jurisdiction against you, under the Defamation Ordinance 2002 for damages in the amount of Rs. 1 Billion.”

“Finally, you hereby put to strict notice that all such legal proceedings as mentioned above shall be solely at your risk as to costs and consequences and without prejudice to the right of our clients to institute any further, independent and separate proceedings in pursuance of any causes of action that have arisen and may arise in accordance with law and as a result of your defamatory statements,” it further read.

The Babar Azam-led side were knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 after registering two wins and as many losses in the group stage. They finished at third place in Group A standings after India and United States of America (USA).
