The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has earned more than 2400 crore INR (nearly $300 million) from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, the new financial documents from the organisation have revealed. Known as one of the richest governing bodies across sports, BCCI has been able to transform the cricketing world with the advent of the IPL in 2008, bringing them great financial success in the process.

As the biggest franchise cricket T20 tournament worldwide, the Indian Premier League has been able to change the lives of players in India and the globe for the better. It has helped the cricketers become financially secure while allowing some of them to earn a payday in millions for a season lasting over two months.

IPL has also brought about a plethora of leagues in T20 and other smaller formats all over the world, keeping a seasoned player occupied throughout the year.

Talking about the annual reports of BCCI, available for public viewing on the website of the cricket’s governing body in India, for five years up to 2021-22, states that they have accumulated a surplus of 32,000 crore INR ($2.7 billion) as of April 2022, as per TOI report. Meanwhile, the IPL for the same year yielded them a net income of $292 million, which is a balance of total revenues of $771 million and expenses of $479 million, substantiated by audited accounting data.

Before this, the BCCI hadn’t published detailed financial statements for public viewing since 2017.

Moreover, Neeraj Kumar, the former BCCI anti-corruption adviser, who published a book about the organisation recently, had levied criticism on the organisation for keeping their finances a secret to the Sydney Morning Herald in June of this year. He was quoted as saying, “It's a matter of great pity that we are so rich and so much money is distributed to our states and never accounted for.”
