Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim confirmed that Harry Maguire’s contract has been extended. While the England international’s contract was set to expire next summer, Amorim confirmed that United used the option to extend Maguire’s contract. However, they also issued a stern warning to the former Leicester defender. Notably, the club is currently on the 14th spot in the Premier League standings, after having won only one of their last five games. The Red Devils are just seven points clear of the relegation zone.
They are 13 points behind the fourth-placed Chelsea and the Manchester United manager previously talked about his concern for the club, saying that they could be in the relegation zone. Maguire was made the club’s captain in his debut season in 2019 after Ashley Young left the side for Inter Milan. He has made 222 appearances for the side and scored 12 goals. After leading the side, former manager Erik ten Hag relieved him of the position for Bruno Fernandes.
We need him a lot; he has to improve as a leader: Ruben Amorim sends stern warning to Harry Maguire
The Manchester United manager said, "Amad is near, Harry Maguire we are going to trigger our option. I spoke with him [Harry] this morning and I told him he has to improve on the pitch, we need him a lot. Also, he has to improve as a leader. We all know the situation that he had here but we need him a lot in this moment, so we are going to trigger, happily, the option for him.” He added that the side is starving for leaders on the field."
Amorim continued, "When you look at our team we are starving for leaders on the pitch. He is a leader, he has to improve that part, he has to improve his game, so we are happy to continue." Notably, United are set to clash against Arne Slot’s Liverpool this weekend. The Reds sit on the top of the Premier League standings, and are six points ahead of the second-placed Arsenal.
