With the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) set to commence in a week’s time, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has once again introduced some unique rules. While the IPL has seen some interesting rules get into play since its inception, especially with the franchises getting leverage in case of a player sustains an injury.

In the latest turn of events, the BCCI has made some provisions where partial replacements are allowed, as stated in a report by Cricbuzz. In a communication released to the franchises, the Indian cricket board has clarified on the situation of a partial replacement and has also spoken of creation of a pool called the Registered Available Player Pool.

BCCI puts special conditions for player replacement ahead of IPL 2025: Reports

As reported by Cricbuzz, the team can pick players from the pool for replacements with the concept being defined well. The rule implies to the wicketkeepers as well and in case they are unavailable, the teams should ask the BCCI for special exemption.

"Where all the wicket keepers in a Franchisee's Registered Squad are unavailable for a Match then such franchisee should ask BCCI for a special exemption. In such circumstances, BCCI would look favourably on a request to allow one short-term replacement wicketkeeper from outside such Franchisee's Registered Squad to be brought into its Registered Squad until any one of the specialist wicketkeepers in that Registered Squad becomes available to play at which point such short-term replacement wicketkeeper may no longer play for the relevant Franchisee," the rule says, according to the report.

Additionally, a player who suffers a season-ending injury might be replaced even if he has already played in a league game during that season if the said injury or illness occurs during or before the 12th league game of the relevant franchise in the season.

However, there is no recorded instance of any of these rules being implemented so far in the 17 seasons, but it might come into picture with the BCCI’s stern actions with the season starting from Saturday, March 22.
