Indian team under Sourav Ganguly did well in the group and super four stages to reach the final. But lost the final to Sri Lanka by a small margin of 25 runs despite the best possible effort from Sachin Tendulkar and were runners-up in this tournament.
Tendulkar was simply phenomenal in that tournament, scoring 281 runs with the bat and picking up 12 wickets with the ball. Skipper Sourav Ganguly also scored 244 runs from six innings at an average of 40.66, respectively. Irfan Pathan was the highest wicket-taker (14) in the Asia Cup 2004 tournament.
Virender Sehwag played a pivotal role in a must-win match against Sri Lanka in the Super Four stage by scoring 81(92) with the bat and also ended with bowling figures of 3/37, respectively.
