The upcoming Boxing Federation of India (BFI) elections were paused on Friday, March 21 by Returning Officer (RO) RK Gauba following the incumbent Ajay Singh-led government body intimated the RO that it demands urgent intervention against the contradictory verdict issued by the judiciary. Justice RK Gauba played a primary role in halting the electioneering process following the favourable order acquired by the Delhi Amateur Boxing Association (DABA) and Himachal Pradesh Boxing Association (HPBA).
On March 20, the Himachal Pradesh High Court also delivered a ruling in favour of the HPBA and instructed the BFI to include the former sports minister Anurag Thakur in the electoral college and extend the last date of nomination so that he can get a chance to file his nomination.
"The President of the BFI has communicated...since these orders have the potential to disrupt the ongoing electoral process/schedule, we are taking steps to approach the superior courts for urgent intervention. Therefore, it’s requested that further orders be awaited before the conflicting orders of the high courts are acted upon,” remarked Mr Gauba while quoting Mr Singh.
Delhi High Court puts stay on the federation’s March 7 directives
The Delhi High Court on March 19 also put a stay on BFI President Ajay Singh’s office order to keep out DABA nominees from participating in the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held on March 28 to elect the new executive. “Only duly-elected members of BFI’s affiliated units are authorised to represent their respective states in the elections,” said Delhi High Court in its directive.
As per reports, Maharashtra State Boxing Association has also filed a writ petition before the High Court of Judicature in Bombay to impeach the RO to stay the polls.
