Borussia Dortmund fans threw fake money and fake bars of gold onto the field during the team's clash against Newcastle United in the Champions League on Tuesday, November 7. Not only this, but fans also held a huge banner reading ‘you don’t care about the sport- all you care about is money’. It came as a protest against UEFA’s reforms of the tournament.

The match saw a brief halt during the second half as fans started throwing fake money and gold bars onto the field. Not only this, but after this, they also threw litter. In the match, Dortmund registered a 2-0 win over Newcastle United. Fans were also holding another banner depicting FIFA chief Gianni Infantino flanked on either side by Paris Saint-Germain chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli.

In the banner, Infantino was wearing a cap that read. “Cash rules everything about me.” The banner depicted Al-Khelaifi with money stuck in his year, while Infantino and Agnelli had a book in between them, reading, “How to kill the football”. The protests come as the European football governing body wants to increase the number of participants and games in the Champions League.

The Südtribüne Dortmund supporters’ group voiced their opinion and said, “It’s about the fan in front of the screen and an increase in the number of games that can be consumed in front of the screen.” They added, “This results in higher TV revenues and therefore more money for associations and clubs — at the expense of players, fans, and national competitions.”
