Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz is set to make his debut for Team Europe in 2024’s Laver Cup. The tournament will be held at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin from September 20-22, 2024. The 20-year-old reigning Wimbledon champion was the first player to be named on Captain Bjorn Borg’s Team Europe. Team Europe were champions for the first four editions of the tournament but faced consecutive defeats to Team World in London in 2022 and Vancouver in 2023.
Borg announced Alcaraz joining Team Europe and said, “I am super excited to have Carlos join Team Europe in Berlin.” Speaking of his plans for the forthcoming edition, he said, “I’m leaving no stone unturned for 2024. The goal is to win and having Carlos commit to Team Europe’s cause is a thrilling start to what I anticipate will be an exceptional roster.”
The 2022 US Open winner, Alcaraz opened up on joining Europe and said, “I appreciate Captain Borg’s confidence in me, and I look forward to teaming up with my rivals in both singles and doubles in Berlin. It means a lot to represent Team Europe at Laver Cup, this is a great honour. I will do whatever is asked of me to win back the Cup for Team Europe. I can’t wait to hear who will be joining me on the team next September.”
Speaking of the tournament, the Laver Cup has been named in honour of 1962 and 1969 Grand Slam winner Australian tennis legend Rod Laver. The tennis tournament is played on the black court which is to be constructed at the arena in Berlin. The three-day tournament features six of the top men’s tennis players from Europe competing with their counterparts from across the world.
