Leicester City boss Enzo Maresca will reportedly take over the role of Chelsea’s permanent manager on a five-year contract. The Blues sacked Mauricio Pochettino last week after just one season at Stamford Bridge. Since then, they have been looking for the right manager to replace the Argentine. A few names that were shortlisted were Roberto De Zerbi who will leave Brighton at the season end as well as Brentford boss Thomas Frank.
According to reports by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea has agreed with Leicester City to appoint Enzo Maresca as their new head coach. While the official contract is yet to be signed, reports suggest that it will be valid until June 2029 and will also include an option to extend until June 2030. Maresca had previously worked as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.
According to The Evening Standard, Chelsea picked Maresca as their No.1 target after parting ways with their previous manager. The Blues were in links with several other names including Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna and departing Barcelona boss Xavi Alonso. The report added that Maresca won Chelsea over with his plan to help Enzo Fernandez unlock his full potential. Chelsea are expected to announce Maresca’s signing, where he will take over the squad that finished sixth in the Premier League.
The side earned a Europa Conference League spot in the process, and the 44-year-old is expected to join when the side travels to the USA for their pre-season tour. Chelsea will clash against Wrexham, Celtic, Club America, Man City, and Real Madrid.
