Football pundit Gary Neville has come in support of Ange Postecoglou’s striking remarks against VAR decisions after Tottenham’s 4-1 defeat to Chelsea. The Tottenham boss blasted the review system and said that it has impacted his side’s ‘out of control’ defeat against Chelsea on Monday, November 6. The Spurs had Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie sent off and they were denied two goals by VAR in their Premier League clash against Chelsea.
Postecoglou was asked about the heavy use of VAR, which saw five goals disallowed, to which he said that VAR is "diminishing the authority" of referees. Neville reacted to the 58-year-old’s remarks and praised him for the same. Neville took to Twitter and called Postecoglou’s remarks 'Class', seemingly extending his support to the football manager’s remarks.
The Australian had said, “Premier League managers should just manage their football clubs. I’ve never and I never will talk to referees about the rules of the game. I was taught that you grow up and you respect the officials.” He went on to say, “Now, managers look for ways to bend the rules. Tell me what the rule is, and I guarantee you will have a room full of managers processing ‘how can I get around this’.”
He added, “What I want are the best officials always being upskilled to officiate the game but it’s so hard for referees to officiate these days. Their authority is constantly getting diminished. I grew up afraid of referees like they were policemen. I’m old school, I’m from a bygone era.”
