Star footballer and one of the greats of the game, Cristiano Ronaldo etched history as he became the first individual to hit one billion followers on social media. The 39-year-old football veteran, who is among the top individual with highest Instagram following (600 million+), has broken several records since he unveiled his YouTube channel, UR Cristiano. 

While the Portugal international broke the record after his account got 1 million subscribers in just 90 minutes since the launch, it marked another record after getting 50 million subscribers in less than a week’s time. But on Friday, September 13, the Al Nassr captain marked a new record, as he hit one billion followers across social media platforms.

The 39-year-old, who last featured in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Scotland in their UEFA Nations League Group A1 match on Sunday, is set to return with his club, Al Nassr, who are schedule to take on Al Ahli Saudi on Friday, September 13 at the Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh. But ahead of the match, the Portuguese took to social media to speak of the historic achievement.

"We’ve made history — 1 BILLION followers! This is more than just a number - it’s a testament to our shared passion, drive, and love for the game and beyond. From the streets of Madeira to the biggest stages in the world, I’ve always played for my family and for you, and now 1 billion of us stand together,” Ronaldo captioned a post on X. “You’ve been with me every step of the way, through all the highs and the lows. This journey is our journey, and together, we’ve shown that there are no limits to what we can achieve. Thank you for believing in me, for your support, and for being part of my life. The best is yet to come, and we’ll keep pushing, winning, and making history together," the post further read.

Cristiano Ronaldo becomes first to reach 900 goals

CR7 as he is fondly called among his followers, Ronaldo scored the 900th goal of his illustrious career in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League group stage match against Croatia in Lisbon on Thursday. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner reached his 900th after tapping a volley from Nuno Mendes’ cross in the 34th minute of the first half of Portugal’s game against Croatia. 

While it was his 900th goal overall, it was his 131st for Portugal, which extended his record for most international goals in world football.
