Indian Grand Master D Gukesh clashed against the reigning world champion Ding Liren in the first round of the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis. Notably, the Indian chess star recently booked his spot in the world championships by winning the 2024 Candidates Tournament. Gukesh is currently on number six in the world rankings while Ding is on his lowest ever rank, world number 15. The game was their first encounter since Gukesh’s recent win.
According to ANI, Gukesh, with black pieces, avoided a potentially dangerous situation after he pushed his pawn to the d4 square. Liren had an opportunity to make the most of it but he played his bishop d3 which allowed Gukesh to extricate himself from a dangerous situation. After this, the game saw several exchanges, ending up in a draw. The players will be up against in the FIDE World Championship Match 2024, which is scheduled to be held from November 20 to December 15 in Singapore.
Earlier in their statement, FIDE announced Singapore as the host of the World Championship and said, “After reviewing the bids and inspecting all potential host cities for their venues, amenities, event programs, and opportunities, the International Chess Federation has selected Singapore as the host of the World Championship Match.”
It further read, “We are delighted that for the first time in the history of FIDE, a match for the World Championship will take place in Singapore. Not only is Singapore one of the most iconic global tourist and business hubs, but it is also a thriving chess centre with great ambitions and talent.”
