Days after former Australia opener David Warner opened up on the possibility of his return in Test cricket seeing the highly-anticipated five-match Border Gavaskar Trophy against India later this year, his wife Candice Warner has now opened up on the same. Speaking with Fox Sports, Candice Warner cleared the air around the retired Aussie opener’s comeback.
Moreover, Candice’s comments come after David Warner a few days ago surprised the cricketing fraternity as he said that he is ready to return to play against India for the upcoming BGT 2024-25. “I’m always available, just got to pick up the phone. I’m always dead serious,” Warner had told Code Sports.
It’s not happening: Candice Warner clears air on David Warner’s return
Meanwhile speaking to Fox Sports’ The Back Page, Candice Warner said that David Warner will not make his comeback even if he is still good enough. “He’s very passionate about playing for Australia and I think George Bailey, the selector, or Andrew McDonald, the coach, picked up the phone and said ‘we need you’, he would jump at it. (But) It’s definitely not going to happen,” said Candice.
“I think if he genuinely didn’t think he was capable of doing it, he wouldn’t have said that but that’s not any disrespect to any of the openers or people (in the fray for selection). If he was to have gone down that path to play again, he would have had to have done it just like everyone else - play Sheffield Shield and everything like that. But it’s not happening. End of discussion,” she further added.
Moreover, it is to be seen that David Warner’s comment came as the world Test champions continue to find his replacement as an opener and Steve Smith agreeing to return to his number four position in the batting lineup. With the opening spot still not confirmed, Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, and youngster Sam Konstas are in the frame to take that place and open alongside Usman Khawaja.
