Reigning singles and doubles French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova has tested positive for COVID-19 and withdrew from the tournament. She announced her medical status on Wednesday via Instagram and informed that she is 'unfortunate' not to be able to defend her title in double. Another Czech player, Marie Bouzkova, also pulled herself out of the clay-court event before her second-round singles match.
Notably, Krejcikova already lost in the first round of singles, but on Wednesday, she wrote, "Last night I started feeling uneasy, and I woke up with a mild fever. It came back positive when I tested for Covid-19 virus," Krejcikova wrote. She further informed that she is unfortunate that she won't be able to defend the title in doubles, "but being optimistic, I am glad I don't have any injury and can't wait to get healthy and back to training."
The 26-year-old is the second player to be tested positive for the COVID-19 since the second Grand Slam tournament began on Sunday. Krejcikova was seeded No. 2 in singles at Roland Garros but was outplayed by 19-year-old Diane Parry on Monday.
A year ago in Paris, Krejcikova was unseeded in singles but stunned everyone with her performance as she defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the summit clash. Then she partnered with Siniakova to add the doubles trophy, becoming the first woman since Mary Pierce in 2000 to win the singles and doubles titles at the French Open.
