The Instagram account of the late great Diego Maradona posted a message of congratulations to the Napoli squad as they won the team’s first Serie A title in 33 years. Maradona’s account is now managed by Diego’s children posted a photo of Maradona in a Napoli shirt on the streets of Napes. They captioned the post as ‘A new date to remember, a new joy for the city, for the people for the history. Thank you to all of you guys! Come on Napoles!”


The last time Napoli won the Scudetto was courtesy of the man himself in the 89/90 season when the Argentine led Napoli with 29 goal contributions in 28 games. Maradona led Napoli to two Serie A titles in 86/87 and 89/90. Since then, Napoli have won the Serie A title for the first time following their 1-1 draw against Udinese.



Napoli’s triumph sees Luciano Spalletti’s side become the first team outside of Juventus, Inter Milan, and AC Milan to win the Serie A title since Roma in 2001. Napoli has led the Italian league from the start, embarking on a 15-game unbeaten streak at the start of the campaign that saw them not lose a league match until January. 


Victor Osihmen and Khvet Khvaratskhelia have been the key for the Luciano Spalletti-led side. The celebrations started after their match against Udinese as the supporters stormed the pitch and set off fireworks. There was also a big crowd of fans at a Maradona mural in the downtown Quartieri Spagnoli neighbourhood in Naples.
