There have been speculations since the beginning of the 16th season of the Indian Premier League that this might be Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s last IPL. Dhoni, who led CSK to the IPL final for a record 10th time, is yet to give confirmation over his retirement. Meanwhile, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev feels that it’s time to enjoy MS Dhoni’s 15 years instead of talking about his retirement.
Fans are flooding the stadiums, and painting them with yellow waves for their favourite player, keeping in mind that it may be MS Dhoni's very last season. During the rain delay on Sunday's IPL 2023 final between CSK and GT, Kapil Dev reacted to fans' demand for CSK skipper Dhoni to continue playing.
Speaking on ABP News, Kapil Dev said one cannot expect Dhoni to play his life, and it is never going to happen. He said, “He has been playing IPL for 15 years. Why is it that we are only talking about Dhoni? He has done his work. What more do we want from him? Do we want him to play all his life? That is not going to happen." The former India great added, "We should instead be thankful that he played for 15 years. Whether he plays next year or not, before departing he has played impressively. He may not have scored big runs but he led the team to the final and it shows what is the importance of a skipper in the game of cricket."
Speaking of his performance in the IPL 2023, Dhoni has scored 104 runs with a strike rate of 185.71. His team, Chennai Super Kings, is set to clash against the reigning champions, Gujarat Titans in the final battle of the ongoing season of the cash-rich league. The summit clash will take place on May 29, for a reserve day final due to heavy rainfall at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on May 28.
