Fans got emotional after Ruturaj Gaikwad replaced Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the captain of the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. The announcement on the eve of the IPL 2024 opener led to chaotic scenes all over social media. While the announcement didn’t come from the Chennai-based franchise, the official account of the IPL revealed that Gaikwad will be at the team’s helm for another blockbuster season of the cash-rich league.
A few minutes later, the franchise dropped an official statement and said, “MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season.” Notably, Dhoni has led the side since its inception and guided them to five titles.
Considering the rumours that this could be Dhoni’s last season, fans were expecting to see a new face taking over the captaincy hat. However, the sudden announcement left fans emotional and they took to social media to react to the same.
CSK will kick off IPL 2024 by clashing against RCB in the season opener on March 22, Friday.
