Matthew Mott, the head coach of England in the white-ball formats, has expressed hope that Ben Stokes will take back his retirement from 50 overs cricket to make a return to the ODI World Cup 2023, scheduled to be played in India. The current England captain in Tests, who was an instrumental factor for his team in winning the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in 2019, bid adieu to the ODIs in July 2022.

Ben Stokes had taken the drastic decision of retiring from the 50 overs cricket, just a year before the quadrennial spectacle, citing issues related to the workload and a desire to give his complete attention to the Test format as the new full-time captain. Later in the year, the 32-year-old played a major role during the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 final, scoring a hard-fought fifty against Pakistan, while staying not out to guide his team to their second trophy in the shortest format, the first after 2010.

Notably, during his captaincy tenure in Test cricket, he introduced the widely regarded “BazBall,” strategy, with the help of head coach of the red-ball format Brendon McCullum, to help England turn a corner in the longest format of the game. It led to Matthew Mott, the white-ball coach, discussing a potential roadmap for bringing Ben Stokes back into the mix for the ODI World Cup 2023.

He was quoted as saying to Mail Sport, “Jos will probably lead the way on that communication, but Ben's pretty straight with all of us. We will see if he's keen. There has not been a clear direction on what he's going to do yet, but we are still hopeful. I've always said his bowling would be a bonus, but just look at what he brings with the bat, even in the field.”

Earlier in the year, Ben Stokes had ended the speculations surrounding his potential return to ODI cricket with two words, which read, “I’m retired.” Currently, he is also in the midst of a break from international cricket, addressing his chronic knee issue, after helping England level the Ashes series with a 2-2 margin a few weeks ago.
