A former India cricketer made a bold claim on changes in the IPL retention rules. Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the retention rules for the 2025 edition of the IPL, which saw the introduction of some major rules. One of the rules states that all Indian players who have either retired or not played international games in the last five years can be considered uncapped.
According to reports by Hindustan Times, this rule has been introduced to accommodate Chennai Super Kings legend MS Dhoni. Dhoni called it quits on international career in 2000 and is only seen playing in the IPL. With the new rules, the former champions can retain their former captain at INR 4 crore. Recently, a former India cricketer made a bold claim about the retention rules and said that this rule has been introduced only for MS Dhoni.
Everyone knows IPL rules were changed for MS Dhoni: Former India cricketer
Former India player Mohammad Kaif expressed strong support for the new rules and said that these rules were changed only for MS Dhoni. Livemint quoted Kaif telling Star Sports, “We will get to see MS Dhoni playing again. He is fit, he is batting aggressively and is good behind the gloves too. As long as he wants to play, the rules will keep getting changed. You got to change the rules, or do whatever you want, to let MS Dhoni play if he wants to play, he is that big of a player and match-winner for CSK.”
He added, "If he's fit and playing good, why not? Dhoni himself says he doesn't need money. He has said that he will do what the team management wants. Yes, retaining him for ₹4 crore does look a little weird, but you have a chance to retain him, regardless. Everyone knows the rule has been changed because of him. And why not? Dhoni is that sort of a player.”
