FIFA confirmed opening an investigation into racist chants by Argentina players after they won the Copa America 2024. La Albiceleste took down Colombia 1-0 thanks to a 112th-minute goal by Lautaro Martinez. After winning the continental tournament for the 16th time, the Argentine team made a few chants mocking the French team in their team bus.
These chants went viral during a live video posted on social media by Chelsea and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez from the team bus in the wake of the Copa victory. Some players, including Fernandez, sang a similar chant after the 2022 World Cup final in which Argentina beat France.
FIFA to launch investigation on Argentina players for racist chants
The statement released by FIFA said, “FIFA is aware of a video circulating on social media and the incident is being looked into. FIFA strongly condemns any form of discrimination by anyone including players, fans and officials.”
Fernandez' club Chelsea had earlier announced they had launched an internal disciplinary procedure against the Argentine midfielder over the incident. Then the former Benfica star also posted an apology for his actions.
There is absolutely no excuse for these words: Enzo Fernandez
Enzo Fernandez wrote, " The song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words. I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations."
