The FIFA World Cup 2023 final between England and Spain was full of action from the start as both teams pulled off a sensational display of football. However, it was Spanish captain Olga Carmona's lone strike that decided the course of the game as La Roja beat the Lionesses 1-0, recreating Spain's 20 1 0 men's world cup final victory, where Andres Iniesta scored the winning goal for Spain against Netherlands.

In the 29th minute of the game, captain Carmona opened the scoring for Spain from winger Mariona Caldentey's assist. The left-back powered a left-footed strike into the bottom right corner past  Mary Earps to strike the first blow.

England midfielder Lauren James started off the bench after missing two games, the quarter-final, and semi-final due to her two-game suspension for stomping on a Nigeria player in the round of 16. After trailing 1-0 at half-time, England coach Sarina Wiegman brought in the 21-year-old, who substituted Alessia Russo at the beginning of the second half.

Reigning two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, on the other hand, was dropped from Spain's starting line-up and replaced Mariona Caldentey in the 90th minute.

Spain midfielder Jennifer Hermoso had the chance to take her side on a two-goal lead, however, she missed the penalty kick in the 69th minute.
