In a tragic turn of events, George Baldock, the former Sheffield United defender, George Baldock, was found dead in a swimming pool of his house in Glyfada, the southern part of Athens in Greece. As per the initial coroner’s findings, the England-born Greece international had drowned, while the police reportedly stated that there was no indication of foul play in his death after the body was found on Wednesday night, October 9.

As per the report from the Reuters news agency, who cited a police official, the police made an attempt to resuscitate George Baldock in his house, but they were unable to revive him, following which the medical emergency units confirmed his timely death at the age of 31 years. But, at the same time, the exact cause of his death will be determined after the  autopsy.

Following a seven-year spell at Sheffield United, George Baldock had joined Panathinaikos in the summer, and his journey with the Greek club didn’t last long. The family of George Baldock released a statement to confirm his death, and stated, “We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family we are in shock at this terrible loss,” while his current club wrote, “We are shocked, we are shocked by the loss of our George. The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We stand with the family and loved ones of George Baldock.”

Sheffield United also took to their official X account to remember George Baldock and wrote, “The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him. The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends.”

The players of Greece are expected to wear black armbands in their upcoming UEFA Nations League clash against England at the Wembley Stadium in London. Meanwhile, just three days later, in the home match versus Ireland in the same tournament, there will be a minute’s silence observed in memory of George Baldock.
