On Saturday, August 31, during a launch event of the Pro Cricket League, Jonty Rhodes said that Gautam Gambhir will prove to be a great appointment for the Indian cricket team in the head coach role. The 55-year-old spoke about how Gautam Gambhir makes an impact in any cricket team he joins, giving examples of his successful time at LSG and KKR in the IPL.
Notably, during his two seasons at Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2022 and 2023 seasons, Gautam Gambhir mentored them to two successive playoff appearances. After joining Kolkata Knight Riders as mentor in 2024, he was instrumental in the renaissance of the franchise, winning the IPL for the first-time in a decade.
Shortly after, Gautam Gambhir was appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. In July, he coached the national team to two consecutive T20I series wins over Zimbabwe 4-1(5) and Sri Lanka 3-0(3), but losing the ODI series 0-2(3) at the hands of Sri Lanka.
Gautam Gambhir speaks his own mind: Jonty Rhodes
Jonty Rhodes talked highly of Gautam Gambhir during the Pro Cricket League launch event, and said, per Sportstar, “Wherever GG (Gautam Gambhir) goes he makes an impact, we saw this when he left the Lucknow Super Giants and went to the Kolkata Knight Riders the impact that he had. He is very much a hands-on guy and is certainly somebody who knows what he wants and speaks his own mind.”
“Gambhir leaves no stone unturned, and now that he has taken over the reigns of the Indian team, they will go from strength to strength,” Rhodes further added.
