With the Women’s Premier League 2025 less than 10 days away, a major development has taken place in the Gujarat Giants’ (GG) camp. Following their team’s horrendous performance in the initial two editions of the league, the Giants team management brought a huge change in the side by handing the leadership mantle to Ashleigh Gardner.

Gardner will replace her compatriot Beth Mooney, who failed miserably as a skipper. The Australian has expressed gratitude to the GG team management for appointing her for the top position.

"It is an absolute honour for me to be named the captain of Gujarat Giants." said the 27-year-old. She also remarked, "I have loved being a part of this team and I am excited to lead this fantastic group in the upcoming season. We have a great mix of young and experienced players and plenty of Indian talent in our squad. I am looking forward to working with the team and making our fans proud."

Gardner kicks off 2025 with a bang

Gardner has started 2025 with a positive note as she played an essential role in Australia’s comprehensive win against England in the Women’s Ashes game played in Melbourne from January 30 to February 1. In her team's innings and 122-run win, she chipped in with five wickets and 44 runs. Her four-wicket haul in the second innings helped Australia bundle out the English team at a score of 148.

Gujarat’s coach Michael Klinger has expressed confidence in Gardner’s captaincy. He said the right-handed player will lead the pack with confidence and under her, the Giants will have their best campaign.

"She is a fierce competitor," expressed Klinger. He also added "Her game awareness, tactical acumen, and ability to inspire players make her the ideal choice to captain Gujarat Giants. We believe she will lead from the front and guide the team towards a successful campaign."

Gardner’s association with Giants dates back to the opening WPL edition in 2023. Following Mooney’s calf injury in the inaugural season, Gardner led the side but couldn’t deliver effective results.
