While the Rohit Sharma-led side thrashed the Lankans, registering a dominant 302-run win to seal the semifinals berth, the star performer was Indian batter Shreyas Iyer. After string of low scores, Iyer scored 82 off 56 deliveries to help the side post 357, hitting six sixes and three fours. Hi performance even impressed former India captain, Sunil Gavaskar. Accepting that there were questions about his place in the team, Gavaskar added that his 82-run knock put an end to all of it.

“I think Nasser mentioned that earlier that he wasn’t playing for his place in the team. He was looking to get the scoreboard ticking, he was looking to play the big shots. So, he really wasn’t concerned about himself, you know? Yes, there were question mark about his place in the team, but he just put them to rest because kind of numbers he bats at,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

However, during his chat on Star Sports, the former India captain advised Iyer to be careful about his shot selection. “He just needs to be at maybe, at some stage at the start. Maybe just be a little careful about his shot selection. Otherwise, you know that’s the reason why he’s at number four and not Rahul.”

Gavaskar’s statement was echoed by former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull, who hailed Iyer’s awareness of the game.
