Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir praised current India skipper Rohit Sharma and took sly dig at former India captain Virat Kohli. Gambhir said that while he has won five titles, many didn't even win once. India defeated Sri Lanka in an exciting final on September 17, Sunday, and lifted the cup after five years. The cricketer-turned-commentator took the opportunity to heap praise on Sharma and lauded him for India's triumph.
Lavishing praise on Sharma for his captaincy, the former India opener said, “There was never a doubt about Rohit the captain. He won 5 IPL titles. Many didn’t even win once.” However, the former world champion quickly added that his real test will be after a fortnight or so. While he didn't take Kohli's name, knowing the rivalry between the two, fans assume it was an indirect dig at the former Royal Challengers Bangalore captain.
In an interview with Star Sports, Gambhir further commented, “But his real test will come in the next 15 days. You have your best 15-18 players in the dressing room now. If they cannot deliver, there will be question marks."
Gambhir, who played an instrumental role in India's 2011 World Cup win, went on to say, “After every World Cup, if the captain is unable to deliver then questions will be raised. Virat Kohli faced it. Rahul Dravid faced it in 2007. If India fail to deliver in 2023, then questions will be raised on Rohit’s captaincy. But this team has the ability to make the World Cup final."
Notably, India defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets after the latter were bundled out at 50. While Mohammed Siraj clinched six wickets, Hardik Pandya took three wickets, and Jaspreet Bumrah clinched the wicket of Kusal Perera.
