The Delhi High Court has ordered the Rajinikanth-starrer "Jailer" movie producers to make sure that starting on September 1, no theatres display the IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) jersey, which is worn by a contract killer in one of the movie's sequences.
The contract killer, who wears the jersey in the movie, is believed to make insulting and misogynistic remarks about a lady. The IPL team contended that the unfavourable portrayal of wearing their shirt without authorization could harm their brand value and reputation.
The filmmakers and the IPL team settled their differences after the lawsuit was filed, and it was decided that the filmmakers would change the scenes with the team shirt to make sure it couldn't be recognised as the RCB jersey.
The RCB jersey would undergo this change by being stripped of its primary colours and branding components. The parties agreed that the change would be made to the theatrical version by September 1, 2023, as the film had already been distributed in theatres on August 10.
The case was filed by the Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd against the producers of the movie Jailer, which is Sun TV Network Ltd. The case was heard by Justice Prathiba M Singh, who asked for the Rajnikanth starrer to have a changed version of the film prior to its release on television, satellite, or any OTT (Over-The-Top) platform .
Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited was represented by lawyers Shwetasree Majumder, Priya Adlakha, and Vardaan Anand, according to Livelaw, while The Sun group was represented by lawyers Deepak Biswas, Harsh Buch, and Srishti Gupta. The lawsuit was dismissed in the very first listing, and as a result, the court ordered the producers to refund the entire court fee to the other party.
