The only Indian to reach the final of the Malaysia Masters, World No. 9 HS Prannoy beat China’s Weng Hong Yang to lift the men’s singles title on Sunday, May 28. The Indian shuttler, who made it to the men’s singles final after his opponent Indonesia’s Christian Adinata conceded the semifinal match after sustaining a knee injury.

 

The 30-year-old beat his Chinese opponent in the final in a three-set match 21-19, 13. 21, 21-18 in a total of 93 minutes in Kuala Lumpur. The World No. 9 clinched the title after registering impressive wins over Chou Tien Chou, Li Shi Feng, and Kenta Nishimoto in the earlier rounds prior to the semifinal win over Adinata.

 

It is to be noted that this is HS Prannoy’s first final of the season and second since his finished as the runners-up at the Swiss Open last year. Other than Prannoy, PV Sindhu after making into the quarterfinals, suffered 14-21, 17-21 loss to Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung.
