India’s top-ranked men’s singles shuttler HS Prannoy has advanced to the quarterfinal at Taipei Open 2023 after taking down Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto in two straight games by 21-9, 21-17. The game lasted for 36 minutes and saw Prannoy take a comfortable win over his Indonesian rival. In the next round, the world number nine is all set to take on Hong Kong’s fifth seed Angus Ng Ka Long.
Prannoy has been in good form lately, as the 30-year-old shuttler claimed the Malaysia Masters Super 300 title last month. In the recently concluded Indonesia Open, Prannoy made it to the semifinals after he lost to the world number one and eventual winner Viktor Axelsen of Denmark. With his victory in the round 16, Prannoy is the lone Indian remaining in the competition. His fellow Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap slumped to Su Li Yang 16-21, 17-21 in a 42-minute-long game.
Apart from that, the Indian mixed doubles pair of Sikki Reddy and Rohan Kapoor also ended their journey at the tournament. The Indian duo fell to the Taipei pair Chiu Hsiang Chieh and Lin Xiao Min 13-21, 18-21 in a game that lasted for just 29 minutes.
On the other hand, Tanya Hemanth went down 11-21 6-21 to her Chinese opponent World Championship and Olympic silver medallist Tai Tzu Ying in merely 28 minutes. On Wednesday, June 21, Mithun Manjunath, Kiran George, Meiraba Luwang Maisnam, S Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian, Sathish Kumar, Gadde Ruthvika Shivani, Aakarshi Kashyap and Bokka Navneeth-Priya Konjenbam pair all crashed out in the opening rou nd.
