Former India cricketer and legend Sunil Gavaskar took an indirect dig at the Indian team management after the side were handed their first Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) defeat after 10 years at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday, January 5. After posting 162-run target for the hosts, the likes of Sam Konstas, Usman Khawaja, Travis Head and Beau Webster contributed decently with the bat to help them cross the line in 27 overs, and win the fifth Test by six wickets and reclaim the series 3-1.

However, this defeat for Team India will go down in history as the first since 2014-15, Sunil Gavaskar was seen lashing out at the Men in Blue. Talking on Star Sports after the completion of the five-match Test series, the former cricketer turned commentator said that they hardly care about what ex-cricketers have to say.

When asked by presenter Jatin Sapru on Star Sports on how India should have prepared for the Test series in Australia, Gavaskar replied, "Humko kya maalum hai cricket ke baare mein. Humko toh cricket aati hee nahin hai. Hum sirf television ke liye baatein karte rehte hain. Hamaari kaun sunta hai (Who are we? We don't know cricket. We just speak just for the sake of TV and get money, don't listen to us, we're nothing. Listen from one ear, remove from another).”

“Irfan aur hum aise hee baat karte rehte hain television ke liye. Hamaari baat sunne ka koi matlab nahin hai. Bas aane dijiye aur upar se chale jaane dijiye. Abhi bhi jo maine kaha, upar se jaane dijiye. Idhar se aane dijiye, idhar se bahar nikal dijiye," he added.

It is to be seen that Jasprit Bumrah’s absence in the majority of sessions in the Sydney Test proved to be a decisive factor for India. After failing to take the field due to back spasm, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna weren’t effective enough with the ball.
