The Hyderabad-born cricketer had an incredible T20I series as a debutant against the West Indies, scoring 173 runs in five matches at an average of 57.66 and a strike rate of 140.65 with a solitary fifty. Tilak Varma also picked up the wicket of Nicholas Pooran in the fifth and final T20I, but he couldn't prevent India from losing the series by 2-3 against the hosts.

While giving an interview to JioCinema, Tilak Varma was quoted as saying, “I never think about my personal milestones. I just want to do whatever is good for the team.” This can be cited as an indirect reference to the controversy surrounding his 49 not out in Providence Stadium, Guyana, when the stand-in captain for Team India against the West Indies, smashed a match-winning six, which didn’t allow the left-handed batter to get his personal milestone.
