Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni is regarded as the greatest skipper to ever helm India in cricket. The wicket-keeper led India to three ICC titles in his tenure, including the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma has also proved himself to be a great Indian captain in recent times. The 37-year-old recently led Men in Blue to their second T20 World Cup title in Barbados on June 29. Despite that, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has picked Rohit Sharma as his choice ahead of MS Dhoni among the two great captains to lead India.
Both MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma have been impressive with their captaincy over the years. The two are the most successful captains in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) leading Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians to five titles each respectively. Talking about Rohit, he is now the third Indian captain after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni to lead India to a World Cup title. In his captaincy, India also reached the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup and the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Rohit currently also has a chance to add more titles in his bag with the Champions Trophy and the World Test championship final coming next year.
Rohit is people’s captain: Harbhajan Singh on Rohit-Dhoni debate
Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has played under captaincy of both MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma during his playing days. He was a part of the Indian team that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup under Dhoni’s captaincy. The former cricketer was also a part of Mumbai Indians’ three IPL title campaigns in 2013, 2015 and 2017. However, in his recent interview with Sports Yaari, Harbhajan picked Rohit Sharma as a better captain than MS Dhoni as Rohit communicates better with his teammates.
“I chose Rohit above Dhoni because Rohit is people’s captain. He goes up to the people and asks them what they want. His teammates connect with him very well. But Dhoni’s style was different. He didn’t talk to anyone. He wanted to convey his thoughts through his silence. It was his way of communicating with others,” Harbhajan Singh was quoted as saying by News18.
