Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim took a cheeky dig at Mikel Arteta during his post-match press conference on Thursday, March 6. United played Real Sociedad away from home in the first leg of the Round of 16 in the UEFA Europa League, and ended the match with a 1-1 draw. In the immediate aftermath, Ruben Amorim gave a couple of statements which had sparked the interest of a lot of fans. One such statement was in context to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. He said, “I will not have the time Arteta had. I feel that”. Amorim gave this statement prior to Manchester United’s upcoming game against the Gunners in the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta took over as manager of Arsenal back in December 2019 and since then only won three trophies with the North-London club, including a FA Cup in his debut season and two English Super Cups. In fact, in the first three seasons that he was in charge of Arsenal, they were not able to secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League, which is considered to be the most prestigious European competition.

Only statistics won’t do justice to Arteta’s stint at Arsenal

Although, Mikel Arteta might not have won a lot of trophies with Arsenal, he has definitely transformed the club and has put them out there as strong contenders for every major title. In the last two Premier League seasons, Arsenal have finished second in what is a highly competitive league season behind Manchester City. In the current season as well, Arsenal are second in the league table, only behind table-toppers Liverpool. Even in the European scenario, Arsenal finished third in the group-stage table of the new UEFA Champions League format and recently defeated Dutch-side PSV by 7-1 in the first leg of the RO16.

Amorim, who took over as the manager of the Red Devils in November 2024, hasn't had a good record with the club. He has only been able to get 18 points in the 16 Premier League games. The Portuguese has been under constant scrutiny from the media and football pundits.
