The International Cricket Council (ICC) is all set to get a new chairperson after Greg Barclay on Tuesday, August 20 confirmed of stepping down from the post in November 2024. With the decision clear from Barclay’s end, the nominations for the post have been opened with the deadline confirmed to be August 27.
Barclay assumed the role in November 2020 and was re-elected in 2022, unopposed. Although, the international body has opened applications for nominations on immediate basis, reports also reveal that Jay Shah is set to contest for the post and if there is no other contender against him, the election process might not be required.
Jay Shah likely to take over as ICC Chairperson
If reports are to be believed, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, Jay Shah is in line to take the helm with the ICC. “For the election to proceed, at least one additional candidate must enter the race and it’s not clear whether there will be a contest at all,” an ICC source close to the development was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
“It will depend on what Mr Jay Shah decides. If he files nomination there will be no election. He will be elected unopposed,” the source further added. The new ICC Chair will take office on December 1, 2024 with the previous term ending in November this year.
Moreover, with reports of Jay Shah taking up the role as ICC Chair, speculations also rife that he might relocate the ICC headquarters from Dubai to Mumbai. However, none of these speculations have been addressed either by the ICC or by Shah, but a decision around the same is likely to come by the end of this month.
