Former India captain and President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly recently opened up on Team India skipper Rohit Sharma’s availability ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). It is to be noted that Rohit Sharma has not travelled with Team India down under ahead of the highly-anticipated five-match Test series against Australia as he was on a paternity break.

The 37-year-old on Friday, November 15 welcomed his second child, a baby boy with wife Ritika Sajdeh. However, there still remains uncertainity over Rohit Sharma’s availability for the first Test, he is likely to join the side ahead of the second Test, which is set to be played from December 6 at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide.

I hope Rohit goes soon as the team needs leadership: Sourav Ganguly opines

Speaking with RevSportz in an interview, former India cricketer Sourav Ganguly opined that the team needs leadership and Rohit Sharma should join the team down under ahead of the first Test, which is set to kick start from November 22 in Perth. “I hope Rohit goes soon as the team needs leadership. I heard his wife delivered a baby boy, so I am sure he can leave (for Australia) as soon as possible,” Ganguly told RevSportz.

He futher added, “If I was in his position, he should be playing first Test. It’s a big series and the match is still a week away. He will not go to Australia after this. He’s a fantastic captain. India needs his leadership.” It is to be noted that Team India is still hunting for an opener to join Yashasvi Jaiswal in the middle in Rohit Sharma’s absence. However, Head Coach Gautam Gambhir has ensured faith in KL Rahul opening alongside Jaiswal, but he added that a better picture will be put forth ahead of the opening Test.

Moreover, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill’s participation in the open Test is still under clouds after the two sustained injuries in the match simulation at the WACA Stadium in Perth last week. In such a case, Rohit Sharma’s return could prove to be a boost for India.
