On Friday, September 27, the stumps on day one of the second Test match between India and Bangladesh were called early due to incessant rains at the Green Park in Kanpur. The rain had caused the toss to be delayed in the morning, and then, in the afternoon hours, the consistent showers in Kanpur meant that the officials had no choice but to abandon play after Bangladesh reached 107/3 in 35 overs in their first innings.

After Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, won the toss, he decided to field first in overcast conditions, and his decision was proven to be correct when Akash Deep picked up a couple of wickets in the morning session. Zakir Hasan didn’t trouble the scorers despite playing 24 balls, while his opening partner Shadman Islam got to 24 off 36 before he went back to the pavilion inside the first hour’s play on day one.

Akash Deep was pick of the bowlers for India on day one against Bangladesh

The afternoon session began on time despite rains making arrival during lunch, and it saw Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque get past the fifty-run stand. But then, against the run of play, Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Najmul Hossain Shanto lbw for 31 runs off 57 balls, giving India the third breakthrough during first day’s play.

When Mominul Haque (31 off 57) and Mushfiqur Rahim (6 off 13) were in the midst of a 27-run stand for the fourth wicket, the bad light led to the players going off the field before the showers made their presence felt big time. Bangladesh had gotten past 100 runs at this stage, and after a wait of nearly an hour, the officials decided to call off play on day one citing rain at the Green Park in Kanpur.

With nearly two session’s worth of play getting wasted on day one, it is expected that 98 overs will be bowled on day two of the second Test match between India and Bangladesh, weather permitting.
