India suffered a humiliating defeat against New Zealand in the recently-concluded three-match Test series, and it goes without saying that the loss left a dent on India’s glorious record in their own backyard. India lost their 12-year record streak which they had created after winning 18 consecutive Test series at home over more than a decade. Moreover, the loss left an impact on their chances to make it to the final of the World Test Championship 2023-25.

The side now have strong battles laid ahead in front of them. India, a two-time WTC finalist, will lock horns with Australia in the highly-anticipated Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Down Under from November 22. The series will begin with the first Test in Perth and come to a conclusion on January 7, 2025 in Sydney. The team, under the guidance of Gautam Gambhir, will aim to register a whitewash against the hosts to solidify their position in the WTC 2023-25 finals.

Notably, the Border Gavaskar Trophy is an international Test cricket tournament played between two of the great cricket playing nations, India and Australia. It has been named after the distinguished former captains, Australia’s Allan Border and India's Sunil Gavaskar. The winner of the series wins the trophy and if the series is drawn, the country holding the trophy retains it. Owing to the glorious history of both the countries, the BGT is one of the most prestigious bilateral trophies in the longest format.

History of Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

The first ever cricket encounter between both the nations was during Australia’s 1935-35 tour of India, when they played a series of four unofficial Tests. The series was followed by the Australian Services cricket team which came to the Indian subcontinent in 1945-46. Later in 1947-48, India toured Australia, following which there were irregular and long gaps between them. Over the years, the series emerged to be one of the premier bilateral trophies in Test cricket. Both teams have a reputation of being difficult to beat at home, and since the inception, India have won eight out of nine series held in India while Australia won four out of seven Down Under as of 2022-23.

The first Test to be played under the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was in 1996-97, which was also Sachin Tendulkar’s first series as a captain. This series consisted of only one match and was played at the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground in Delhi. The game saw the hosts recording a seven-wicket win.
