On Thursday, June 27, India will be taking on England in the second semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2024, at the Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana. In the build-up to the highly anticipated match, the spokesperson of the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that the overs will be reduced only at approximately 12:10 AM IST, 250 minutes after the scheduled start at 8:00 PM IST.
As per the report from ESPNcricinfo, an ICC spokesperson spoke to them about the playing conditions for the knockout stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 in detail. When asked about how the second semifinal doesn’t have a reserve day unlike the first one between South Africa and Afghanistan in Trinidad, he reasoned that there is only a day’s gap between the second semifinal in Guyana and the final in Barbados.
The conversation went towards how the ICC is preparing to conduct the second semifinal between India and England, in terms of reserve time allocation. The spokesperson went on to confirm that the overs would be reduced only after a wait of 250 minutes, which wasn’t the case for the matches in the group and Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Moreover, in the knockout stage of the T20 World Cup 2024, the match will be constituted when both teams bat for 10 overs each. This is quite different from league matches, where five overs in the second innings were enough to get a result.
Furthermore, if the semifinals get washed out in the T20 World Cup 2024, then the team which had finished on top of the standings in the Super 8 groups, will advance to the final of the tournament. Since India finished on top of Group 1 in the Super 8 stage, they will get the ticket to the grand finale at the expense of England if the rains play spoilsport at Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana.
