Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, has withdrawn from the upcoming Davis Cup tie of Serbia against Denmark due to a hamstring injury suffered at the Australian Open semi-final. The 37-year-old had to retire from the match against Alexander Zverev of Germany at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne after losing the first set because of his injury issue, and some of the fans didn’t take too kindly to that by booing him off court.
Just a day later after failing to win the Australian Open for a whopping 11th time in his illustrious tennis career, Novak Djokovic shared a photo of the MRI of his injured left hamstring. He captioned the post on X, “Thought I’d leave this here for all the sports injury “experts” out there” after his apparent injury was considered not to be true by some due to his proclivity to be anti-establishment so to speak, especially after his stance against vaccines in the wake of the pandemic.
We are weakened by not playing Novak, but we are still going for the win: Viktor Troicki
With the absence of Novak Djokovic in the team, Serbia will be relatively weakened against Denmark in their first-round qualifying tie of the Davis Cup, which is scheduled to begin on Friday, January 31. Notably, Novak Djokovic was a part of the Davis Cup-winning team of Serbia way back in 2010 when his professional tennis career started to take off at the ATP Tour and the Grand Slam level, and he hasn't looked back since.
Viktor Troicki, the captain of the Serbian tennis team, talked about how it will be very difficult for them to take on Denmark with the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic from the Davis Cup tie, but they are going to find a way. He was quoted as saying, as per BBC Sport, “We are weakened by not playing Novak, but we are still going for the win. The Danes have a great player in Holger Rune, but our players are also great and I believe in my team.”
