Going back to Virat Kohli, the Delhi-born batter ended a 1205-day wait for a hundred in red-ball cricket. This also was Kohli’s 28th Test ton and celebrated this milestone by dedicating it to his wife Anushka Sharma. After reaching the three-figure mark, he kissed the necklace around his neck which had his wedding ring.
After completing the ton, Kohli accelerated his innings and posted a massive 262-run partnership with Axar Patel. The Gujarat all-rounder played a fast-paced knock of 79 in 113 balls which included five fours and four sixes. With the efforts of this pair, India managed to overcome Australia’s 480-run first-innings score and took a lead of 91 runs.
Talking about this performance, Patel stated that he was satisfied with his contribution. He further spoke about how he just focused on scoring quick runs. He said, “I am feeling good to have contributed with the bat. I've had the confidence to go after ones that I can hit, the talk in the 1st Test is what I'm following and I'm gaining a bit of information about my ability with the bat.”
“I had no set role (when asked if he was told to score quickly), just wanted to make as many runs as possible, bat along with the ball not doing a lot. Once you're set, it's easier to bat, the odd ball is turning and staying low, it's slightly difficult when you're new to the crease, but once you adjust, it's still easy to bat on this wicket.”
