The highly anticipated IPL 2025 mega auction, which will decide the fate of 577 shortlisted players, is currently underway at the Abady Al Johar Arena in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. With just 204 slots up for grabs, including 70 overseas ones, only a select few out of 367 Indian and 210 overseas players will be picked by the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams for the 2025 season. Mitchell Starc, Australia's left-arm pacer and batsman who is the most sought-after player in the mega auction, has been signed by Delhi Capitals for INR 11.75 Crore.
The franchise engaged in a bid with five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians after the latter made the first bid at INR 2 Crore. They were soon joined by Starc's previous franchise KKR. Both these franchise engaged in a bidding war till INR 6 Crore before Delhi Capitals jumped in. RCB were next to join the bidding war but soon backed out after the war went past 10 Crore mark. The Delhi-based franchise ended up winning the bid and signed the Aussie star who became the most expensive player in the previous edition at INR 24.75 Crore.
Mitchell Starc's IPL Career
Mitchell Starc, who made his debut in 2014, had set the auction stage ablaze in 2024 when KKR picked him for Rs 24.75, the highest for any international player in IPL. However, his overall performance in the last season wasn't that great. While Starc struggled in the group stages, allowing runs at a pace of 10.61, he rebounded in the playoffs. His outstanding performances in the semi-finals and finals were crucial in KKR winning their third IPL title.
Starc has played 40 matches in three seasons of IPL with 105 totals and the highest is 29. However, his bowling area has been great. In 41 matches, he took 51 wickets with an average of 22.39. In the last IPL 2024 season, he took 17 wickets in 14 games which is quite an impressive number.
