The highly anticipated IPL 2025 mega auction, which will decide the fate of 577 shortlisted players, is currently underway at the Abady Al Johar Arena in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. With just 204 slots up for grabs, including 70 overseas ones, only a select few out of 367 Indian and 210 overseas players will be picked by the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams for the 2025 season. Mohammed Shami, who is one of the sought after Indian players in the mega auction, has been signed by SunRisers Hyderabad for INR 10 Crore.
The defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) got the ball rolling before Chennai Super Kings (CSK) getting involved for the first time in the day. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and SunRisers Hybderad (SRH) also joined the bandwagon before the Hyderabad based franchise finally got his services for INR 10 Crore.
Mohammed Shami’s IPL Career
Mohammed Shami missed the entire IPL 2024 season due to an injury he got during the CWC 2023 final. The 34-year-old was released by Gujarat Titans ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. He has registered himself at a base price of INR 2 Crore and features in Set No. 2 of the marquee players' list. The right-arm fast bowler is known for his accuracy and wicket-taking ability. Shami can swing the ball both ways in the powerplay and remains highly effective in the middle overs and at the death.
Shami started his IPL career with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2013, playing just three matches before moving to Delhi Capitals for four seasons. His breakout year came in 2019 with Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab), where he took 19 wickets in 14 matches. He continued to perform well for Punjab until Gujarat Titans signed him in 2022. That year, Shami helped Gujarat win their first IPL trophy. In 2023, he won the Purple Cap as the top wicket-taker with 28 wickets, although Gujarat lost the final to Chennai Super Kings.
Overall, in his IPL career, Shami has played 110 matches and taken 127 wickets at an economy rate of 8.43. Shami missed the IPL 2024 season due to an ankle injury but has since made a strong return, playing domestic matches for Bengal.
