The Indian Premier League (IPL) General Council on Saturday, September 28 rolled out the player retention guidelines ahead of the mega auction, set to be held later this year. The decision from the IPL General Council came after a constructive dialogue between the committee members and the ten franchise owners.
Moreover, apart from the player regulations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also set the deadline for the franchises to submit the retained players list. According to a report published by Cricbuzz, the teams will have to finalise and submit the list of retained players by October 31. Although an official confirmation on the same by the BCCI is still awaited.
Furthermore, the report has also added that any player who gets capped on or before October 31, will be considered a capped player as the franchises can now retain a maximum of two uncapped players.
IPL to re-introduce Right to Match (RTM) card; franchises can retain up to six players
On Saturday, September 28, the IPL General Council rolled out the TATA IPL Player Regulations for 2025-27 cycle. According to the latest guidelines, a franchise can retain a total of six players from their existing squad. The players can be retained by following the retention process or by using the Right to Match (RTM) option, which has been re-introduced.
Moreover, the retentions can be a combination of capped and uncapped players. A maximum of five capped (Indian and overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped players can be retained from the existing squad. Furthermore, the IPL General Council has taken a decisive step towards the overseas players pulling out of the tournament. As per the latest guidelines, “any player who registers in the player auction and after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the tournament, will be banned from participating in the tournament and player auction for two seasons.”
IPL auction purse set at INR 120 Crore for IPL 2025
With the IPL General Council releasing out benchmark decisions after the meeting in Bengaluru, the committee has also increased the purse for the franchises to INR 120 Crore for IPL 2025. According to the statement, “the total salary cap will now consist of auction purse, incremental performance pay and match fees.” Moreover, a match fee has been introduced for the first time in the history of the tournament. Each playing member, which includes the Impact Player as well, will get a match fee of INR 7.5 Lakh per match. Notably, this is an additional amount to the contracted price.
